Is Vero the new Instagram

In General Stuff by Patrick

So I am a bit late to the party with this one.  Vero has been around since 2015 and is a response to changes in social media that has been going more commercial arguably ruining the experience for a great many.  Many apps have tried to unseat Instagram (remember Google Plus) and have faded into oblivion.   Vero is different as it has positioned itself as a different kind of social network, one designed in response to the ways in which existing networks have counterintuitively made people unsociable. It’s grown from less than 1 million registered users to nearly 3 million, according to the company, in its first few days back when it started. According to Ayman Hariri, the founder, the platform is different than existing ones. I think it has both good and bad components.

“Our intention is really to create an online social network that mimics the greatest social network that exists, which is the one that exists between people. “Our responsibility as designers and developers is to have technology be a tool for people — to have it enhance their life experiences and not to detract from them.”.Ayman Hariri

First the good – How is Vero different than existing platforms?

Photos, videos and text content shared by users on Vero doesn’t just blast out to a mix of their friends and followers. You can specify which fellow users are your close friends, acquaintances or mere followers and post to each group separately. Another big draw of Vero is that its feed isn’t manipulated by an algorithm. Posts from accounts users appear in chronological order (like they used to on Instagram). There are no ads on Vero, either. The business model is subscription-based. To sign up, users must provide their name, email address and mobile phone number, but for now, Vero’s not charging anyone.

There are things about the platform that I like, It’s sleek design and easy simple interface. I agree with the Community Guidelines. Despite all that, I may try Vero sparingly to see if this is a viable platfomr to showcase my work and to connect with others. Stay tuned.

Now the potential bad

According to the companies spokesperson, current revenue is based on fees charged for using the buying and selling. Casual users who do not utilize this are still able to use the platform for free. Even thought the current platform is free, that could soon change whenever the company wants.

“The company will eventually charge subscriptions. Vero states that it wants the eventual annual subscription fee to be “accessible,” though the company isn’t ready to announce a figure yet.”.Ayman Hariri

Another issue that I will have to give some thought to is the fact that according to Vero’s Terms of Service your creative property, in my case videos and photographs, and all of your content, including your likeness, and everything you upload to your profile, without your permission or knowledge? In all fairness and transparency, they have updated this since 2018 and it is much better.
